Australia launches solar funding round for technology innovation

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency has opened the third round of its Solar Sunshot program to back advanced manufacturing and deployment technologies.

By the CEII Desk, from reporting by pv magazine

Key points

  • ARENA opened Solar Sunshot Round 3 with AUD 250 million available.
  • The round targets commercial-scale balance of plant, robotics, and tracking systems.
  • Expressions of interest are scheduled to open on 2 November 2026.

What happened

pv magazine reported that the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has initiated the third phase of its Solar Sunshot initiative. The funding window offers AUD 250 million to domestic and international enterprises possessing commercially ready technologies. Dan Sturrock, general manager of solar at ARENA, stated that the program aims to attract top global innovators to manufacture equipment locally at scale.

Why it matters

According to the reporting, Round 3 concentrates on commercial-scale balance of plant equipment and deployment infrastructure, including tracking mechanisms, advanced automation, and robotics. Successful applicants must support ARENA's ultra low-cost solar targets, which include achieving high module efficiency and lower installation costs by the end of the decade. Participants are required to secure private investment to cover at least half of their total project expenses.

What comes next

Expressions of interest for the latest funding stage are set to begin on 2 November 2026. This follows recent grants awarded under Round 2 to robotic firms establishing local manufacturing operations in Melbourne and Brisbane. Meanwhile, ARENA has extended the application deadline for upstream manufacturing feasibility studies under Round 1B through 12 November 2027.

Context from CEII

Renewables are the fastest-growing part of the world’s energy system. The COP28 goal is to triple capacity by 2030, and solar mini-grids are the fastest route to power for millions of people without electricity.

26.7% of electricity in Australia was renewable in 2021
