Nigeria submitted its updated Nationally Determined Contribution in 2021. It kept the unconditional target at 20% below business-as-usual emissions by 2030 and raised the conditional target, which depends on international finance, technology and capacity support, from 45% to 47%.
The update moved the base year for the greenhouse-gas assessment from 2010 to 2018 and widened the scope to include an enhanced waste-sector contribution, water resources and nature-based solutions.
What it sets out to do
- 20% reduction below business as usual by 2030 (unconditional)
- 47% reduction below business as usual by 2030 (conditional on support)
- Broader coverage including waste, water and nature-based solutions
The CEII view
The gap between 20% and 47% is the size of the opportunity for climate finance in Nigeria. Projects that can show measurable emissions reductions are positioned to draw on that international support.
