Mexico updates renewable pipeline and investment plans
Mexico's energy ministry has detailed ongoing revisions to its renewable energy development pipeline alongside infrastructure investment projections.
Key points
- Sener recorded 42 solar photovoltaic projects and 13 wind ventures in its current development queue.
- State utility CFE participates in about 70 percent of the portfolio.
- Total generation investments between 2025 and 2030 are projected at MXN 794.11 billion.
Pipeline updates
According to pv magazine, Mexico's Energy Ministry, known as Sener, has updated its renewable energy inventory. Government figures show 42 solar photovoltaic installations representing 6,856.4 MW alongside 13 wind initiatives totalling 4,027.5 MW currently in the development pipeline. State-owned utility Federal Electricity Commission, or CFE, participates in roughly 70 percent of these undertakings.
Additional unallocated capacity of 9,050 MW remains under review, encompassing solar, wind, cogeneration, geothermal, solar thermal, and hydrogen proposals. Sener anticipates finalising this allocation procedure before the conclusion of 2026. The latest metrics reflect a downward adjustment from figures published in June, which listed 50 solar sites and 17 wind projects.
Financial commitments
Sener projects total expenditures of MXN 794.11 billion, equivalent to $42.9 billion, for power generation infrastructure between 2025 and 2030. Mixed-development schemes account for MXN 452.54 billion of this outlay, while private initiatives and direct CFE investments receive MXN 199.11 billion and MXN 142.46 billion respectively.
Specific developments include the Rafael Galvn Maldonado solar facility located in Puerto Peasco, Sonora. Construction on the third phase has reached past 27 percent completion, incorporating battery storage capabilities. Furthermore, authorities intend to raise the contribution of renewables within national electricity output from 24 percent to a minimum of 38 percent by 2030, according to Sener records. World Bank data indicates that Mexico's renewable share of electricity output stood at 23.4 percent in 2021.
