Eni rewards investors as West African projects boost output

Italian energy firm Eni has announced a special dividend and higher share buybacks following a strong third-quarter financial performance.

By the CEII Desk, from reporting by Business Insider Africa

Key points

  • Eni reported an adjusted net profit of about $3.3 billion for the third quarter.
  • Hydrocarbon production rose by 7% year-on-year, driven partly by operations in West Africa.
  • Chief executive Claudio Descalzi highlighted strong cash generation and low debt levels.

What happened

According to Business Insider Africa, Italian energy company Eni has announced a special dividend of $1.5 billion alongside an expanded share buyback programme. The firm published its third-quarter financial results on 23 October, revealing an adjusted net profit of approximately $3.3 billion for the period ending in September. This figure surpassed market expectations and pushed the company's share price higher.

Chief executive Claudio Descalzi stated that the robust financial returns were supported by solid cash generation, efficient project execution, and low debt levels. Underlying hydrocarbon output grew by 7% compared to the previous year, reaching 1.83 million barrels of oil equivalent daily. The firm pointed to ramping operations across West Africa, Norway, and Mexico, alongside its Southeast Asian joint venture, as the primary drivers of this volume increase.

While specific field contributions were not detailed, the company maintains extensive upstream operations in West Africa. These include the Baleine initiative in Côte d'Ivoire and the Offshore Cape Three Points asset in Ghana. Beyond these areas, the company continues to advance developments across Angola, Algeria, Libya, Egypt, and the Republic of Congo.

What comes next

Following the strong quarterly results, Eni raised its full-year operating cash flow forecast and upgraded its annual production growth projection. The enterprise also expanded its share repurchase allocation. Management intends to distribute the extraordinary dividend to shareholders in December while continuing to balance traditional hydrocarbon investments with its lower-carbon divisions, including biofuels and renewable energy.

Why it matters

According to US EIA data from October 2026, Brent crude was trading at $115.22 per barrel. This pricing environment bolsters upstream profitability across major producing regions. For African policymakers and industry participants, the financial performance of international operators underscores the enduring role of the continent's oil and gas assets within global energy portfolios, even as companies pursue broader corporate diversification strategies.

Context from CEII
