What happened

A liquefied natural gas carrier was approached by a small boat carrying seven individuals approximately 140 nautical miles southeast of the Yemeni city of Mukalla, Yemen Online reported, citing the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations.

The occupants of the small boat fired two shots toward the commercial vessel. According to the advisory, the carrier's armed security team returned warning shots, causing the approaching boat to alter its course and move away.

Why it matters

Maritime authorities reported no injuries among the crew and no damage to the LNG carrier, which continued its journey after the encounter. The incident occurred in the southeastern coastal waters of Yemen, a region experiencing heightened security risks due to ongoing regional tensions impacting commercial shipping lanes.

Officials have advised vessels operating in the area to maintain high levels of vigilance and report any suspicious activity without delay.
