Nightpeak expands Texas storage capacity with Bocanova 2

Nightpeak Energy has brought its 150MW Bocanova 2 battery facility online in Texas, bringing total site capacity to 300MW.

By the CEII Desk, from reporting by Power Technology

Key points

  • Nightpeak Energy completed the 150MW Bocanova 2 facility in south-east Texas.
  • Commercial operations began on 17 September alongside a financial close.
  • The project utilises Tesla Megapack 2 XL lithium-ion systems to support grid stability.

What happened

Power Technology reported that Nightpeak Energy finalised the 150MW Bocanova 2 battery storage installation located in Brazoria County, Texas. This addition doubles the operational capacity at the site, joining the initial 150MW Bocanova 1 unit that started running in August 2025. Commercial operations for the second phase commenced on 17 September.

Financing for the project involved a construction-to-term loan and a tax equity bridge facility arranged by MUFG Bank, alongside traditional tax equity from U.S. Bank. Tesla supplied the Megapack 2 XL lithium-ion battery technology deployed at the location.

Why it matters

The Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid requires additional flexibility to manage increasing electricity consumption driven by data centres and heavy industrial expansion in the region. Paris Hays, co-founder and chief development officer at Nightpeak Energy, noted that rapid demand growth is fundamentally altering how the power sector plans for new infrastructure, according to Power Technology.

Nightpeak operates under a long-term offtake agreement with an investment-grade partner for the facility. Since its founding in 2022, the developer has built or acquired more than 1GW of operational and de-risked energy assets.
